The Google Business Profile Checklist for Irish SMEs

Your Most Valuable Free Listing

When someone searches for what you do near them, Google often shows a map and three local businesses before any normal website result. Being in that pack is some of the most valuable visibility you can get, and it is completely free. It is governed by your Google Business Profile. Yet most Irish SMEs claim the profile, add a phone number, and stop. A fully built, actively maintained profile consistently outranks a neglected one, even when the neglected business is larger or older.

The Setup Checklist

Completeness is a ranking factor. Google rewards profiles that give searchers everything they need. Work through this list and fill every field you can.

  • Claim and verify the listing with your real business address
  • Exact, consistent name, address, and phone across the web
  • The most accurate primary category, plus relevant secondary ones
  • Full opening hours, including holiday hours
  • A keyword-aware but natural business description
  • Real photos of your premises, team, and work
  • Products or services listed with descriptions

Reviews Are the Engine

Reviews influence both your ranking and whether a searcher actually picks you. A steady stream of recent, genuine reviews signals an active, trusted business. A profile with three reviews from two years ago signals the opposite. Build a simple habit of asking happy clients for a review at the natural moment, just after you have delivered something they are pleased with. Make it easy by sending a direct link. And reply to every review, positive or negative, because that responsiveness is visible to everyone considering you.

Keep It Alive

A Business Profile is not set-and-forget. Google favours active profiles. Posting updates, adding fresh photos, answering questions, and keeping information current all signal that the business is open and engaged. Thirty minutes a month is enough: add a couple of photos, post an update or offer, answer any new questions, and request a review or two. That small, consistent effort is often the difference between appearing in the local pack and being invisible.
